Patient Information

Dr. Babajanian and his staff firmly believe in a streamlined and simple process of arranging for consultation and the subsequent care. As a board-certified Otolaryngologist, Head and Neck Surgeon, his practice encompasses all aspects of Ear, Nose and Throat care and diseases of head and neck region. However, his practice has a major concentration on and dedication to Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery.

You are welcome to schedule an appointment with Dr. Babajanian by directly calling his office. A trained and knowledgeable staff member will be happy to assist you at all times. Alternatively, your primary care physician, an endocrinologist or any other physician may refer you to our office, in which case a referral contact is typically made by your physician or yourself in order to schedule the initial consultation. We work very closely with you and your referring physician(s) to manage your care comprehensively. You and your referring doctor should feel confident that your care is our priority and our privilege. We fully recognize that referral for surgery may impose significant stress and anxiety on you. We dedicate ourselves to accommodating you and your individual needs in any way we can. At all times, we welcome your questions, comments and suggestions in order to improve our care for you and other patients who kindly entrust their care to us.

Initial Consultation:

After scheduling your appointment, you simply need to arrive at our office approximately 30 minutes prior to your appointment time. Although you may complete the necessary demographics form and health care questionnaire at our office on the day of your consultation, you may expedite this step by downloading, printing and completing the necessary forms prior to your arrival as well. These forms are available as PDF files as follows by clicking on their links:

Note: These files are in PDF format. If you do not have Adobe Reader® on your computer, you can download it for free by clicking here or on the Get Adobe Reader icon.

During the initial consultation, adequate time will be allocated to review your history, physical examination and available records. Depending on what preoperative tests have been already performed and available for review, if there are other studies pending, arrangements will be done to perform those tests in an expedited manner. If a needle biopsy is indicated and has not already been done, we will either perform it at our office or make arrangements for it to be done under ultrasound guidance. Likewise, if ultrasound or other imaging studies are needed, we will schedule them for you. Please bring with you all available test results, biopsy reports or imaging studies for review on the day of your initial consultation. You are also welcome to bring with you a family member or a friend if you so desire. Dr. Babajanian, after evaluating you, will directly contact your referring physician or primary doctor in order to plan and coordinate your care. If, however, you are in need of any other physician, he will recommend you to expert physicians from any and all specialties of medicine and surgery as deemed necessary.

Before surgery:

All administrative matters regarding scheduling of surgery, insurance pre-authorization and notification, as well as scheduling the pre-operative medical evaluation by your primary care physician, will be arranged by our office staff in consultation with you. You will be asked to be seen by your primary care physician within two weeks prior to the date of surgery to have the preoperative tests, such as blood tests, EKG and/or chest X-rays as indicated and necessary. You will also meet with Dr. Babajanian a few days before surgery to review and discuss all matters related to the surgery and get answers to any and all questions which may have remained prior to the operation. In anticipation for surgery, you will be asked to avoid anticoagulants (blood thinners) such as aspirin, Coumadin or other similar medications, as well as certain vitamins and herbal supplements which may interfere with blood clotting, for two weeks prior to surgery. You will be asked to avoid or limit smoking and consumption of alcohol prior to surgery in order to avoid surgical and anesthesia complications.

The day of surgery:

You will be given detailed instruction as to when and where to report to the hospital. Typically, you should plan on arriving at the hospital approximately two hours prior to the surgery time. The hospital staff members are fully trained to care for you compassionately and professionally as soon as you enter the hospital. You will be greeted and escorted to the operating room area by the hospital staff. You will then meet with Dr. Babajanian and his associate/assistant surgeon, the anesthesiologist and the operating room nursing staff. You will enter the operating room with Dr. Babajanian and the anesthesiologist always at your side and in attendance. At the hospital, your health care team meticulously thrives to provide you with safe, ethical and appropriate care at all times, meeting and exceeding your expectations.

After surgery:

After surgery, you will immediately see Dr. Babajanian and the anesthesiologist upon recovery from anesthesia. You will be cared for in the Recovery Room for as long as needed until you are fully awake and alert. You will then be hospitalized for inpatient care and recuperation, or sent home in the case of outpatient surgery. You will be instructed on details regarding the postoperative care of the surgical wound, diet, medications and activity level. You will need to avoid strenuous activity, heavy exercise and long travels for about one week following surgery. After leaving the hospital, you will always have access to Dr. Babajanian and his office 24/7. You will see Dr. Babajanian for your postoperative visit usually one week after surgery at his office. Further follow-up care, as indicated, will be arranged at that point and again will be coordinated with your primary care physician and/or your endocrinologist. You are encouraged to contact us with any question at any time.

Patient Testimonial:

"My experience with Dr. Michel Babajanian resulted in the highest caliber of surgery, treatment and follow-up. His skills as a surgeon were already highly touted to me beforehand and they absolutely measured up. But his care and attention when following up with me after surgery are what I feel takes him to the next level of patient care. In a world where health care is a scary and costly proposition, knowing you are in Dr. Babajanian's hands will bring you confidence, relief and comfort at a time when you need it the most. This guy is the best and I thank him for getting me through a very difficult period. Like me, I have no doubt you'll feel incredibly lucky to be in his hands."
